FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Does JJO help?

  1. JJO’s main focus is the youth and families in the North Idaho Juvenile Justice System. Beyond that, youth that are displaying risky behaviors, poor decision making, bad coping behaviors, criminal behavior, substance use, etc. are welcome to join our 301 and 318 groups by going through the proper channels (see more info below).

  1. How do I get my child involved?

    1. Visit the ‘Help My Youth’ page and use the submission form to make contact with our intake team.

  2. How does my child qualify for services?

    1. Each service we offer is a little different.

      1. 301 Group Mentoring: call the Kootenai County Juvenile Probation office and ask about getting your child signed up for 301. JPro staff will walk you through the process.

      2. 318 Young Adult Mentoring: Use the submission form HERE to get in touch with JJO’s intake team.

      3. Individual Mentor Program: Use the submission form HERE to get in touch with JJO’s intake team.

      4. Scholarships, funding and other resources: Currently, our focus in this area is the youth and families in the Juvenile Justice System. Reach out to your PO or the JPro office to inquire about getting help. If you are not in the system, use the submission form HERE and if we can’t help you, we may be able to refer you to another local organization.

  3. My child is incarcerated at the Juvenile Detention Center in CDA, Idaho. How can I get help for him/her?

    1. Your child has access to weekly religious groups led by local Christian Chaplains. We would encourage your child to attend these co–ed groups! Additionally, a youth can request a one on one visit with a Chaplain of their choice. We must have parent or guardian permission for these visits to happen. We will call the parent/guardian contact on file at the JDC to get permission if a youth requests such a visit. You can reach out to us yourself if you’d like to give permission or ask questions.

    2. We encourage the youth to let their parent/guardian know about the resources and programs we have available on the outside. Please use the submission form HERE to get your child involved when they are released.

  4. What does JJO offer for parents/guardians of an at-risk youth?

    1. Currently, we do not have a support system in place for the parents/guardians of our at-risk youth. However, use the submission form HERE to reach out and we will attempt to connect you with an organization or program that can help.

  5. I work with families that are struggling with their youth at home. How do I get them connected to JJO?

    1. Have them use the submission form HERE to get in touch with us, and we’ll communicate with them directly and help however we can!

Volunteering with JJO

What opportunities are there to serve with JJO?

  1. Visit our volunteer info page HERE to find out how you can serve our youth!

  1. What does the volunteer application process look like?

This is an involved, lengthy process because our youth are vulnerable and easily preyed upon. It is also a big commitment to step into the lives of at-risk youth, and we need to know that you can fulfill that commitment.

  1. Use the submission form HERE to reach out about volunteering.

  2. We’ll set up a meeting with one or more of our volunteer intake team members to see if you’re a good fit with JJO and our youth.

  3. If the fit seems right, we’ll provide the volunteer application packet and we’ll run a cursory background check.

  4. If everything looks good, you’ll attend one or two 301 Group Mentoring sessions (Mondays from 6p-8p) to introduce you to our youth population and our staff and volunteers.

    1. This step is important, even if you don’t eventually serve at 301 because its helpful for you to interact with our population of youth before you commit to becoming a volunteer, and we need to see you ‘in action’ before we approve you as a volunteer.

  5. If both sides would like to move forward you will then get your fingerprints done a the Juvenile Detention Center in CDA.

    1. Prints usually take 4 weeks or more for processing.

  6. While the prints are processing, we will schedule the second meeting with our intake team, which will take place at your home. This last step provides us with more information about you, and helps us determine if working with our youth is a good fit for you.

  7. If we all agree that the fit is good and your prints come back without any red flags, we’ll get you started!

  1. Can I be a guest speaker, provide dinner for the group, or provide a field trip location for 301?

    1. Yes! Use the submission form HERE to reach out and let us know what you’d like to offer the group.

      1. If you’d like to provide dinner for 301, use THIS link to get to our meal train page. Thank you!
